Perhaps I'm just in a contrary mood but since when, on this site, can an ultra rare...only ten known...SS cap be posted with five full pages of positive comments? There isn't one single negative comment. I personally have never handled one of these to be fair and cannot claim that this cap is good or bad. I would have expected that by now someone would ask why the skull looks like it was polished yesterday. Might the chin cord be collector added since the side buttons are placed so high and the wear seems inconsistent with the cap? Speaking of the excessive wear, I'm surprised that no one has challenged that as well. if someone unknown had posted this cap, it would not have gone this way.

The very reason why your opinion and doubts are irrelevant are because you've never owned such a cap and the majority of collectors who have voiced an opinion here do own such a cap. Don't get me wrong though, I'm happy to go into detail about any doubts you have.

I'm sure that most on this forum know that these threads become links in sales threads on dealers sites. I don't know how long you will be owning this hat, but I wouldn't want some new collector, considering its purchase, to think that EVERYONE was in lock step behind you and this cap.

Perhaps I've been reading about too many burned collectors lately. The most recent was the thread in the Iron Cross section. A Vietnam Vet bought several RK's from a dealer. He passed away recently and the family just learned they are all garbage. I'm sure he died believing that he was leaving a nest egg for the family.

I think that I knew that I was standing alone in my opinions on your cap. I'm really OK with that.

Best Regards and Happy Easter to All (even you Ben) "irrelevant" Dexter

Possibly a non German made cap.

And no one is forcing anyone to be in "lock step". We each have our own opinions and that's how it should be. You've decided to voice your doubts and that's fine. I think your doubts are unfounded so we'll just have to agree to disagree and that's fine too. Happy Easter!

You have admitted you know nothing about these caps and yet it appears you desperately are inviting negative comments.

What is "sad and pathetic" is the way this "ultra rare...only ten known" cap has been approved by the people here. This forum used to be known for its objective opinions. Again, If it was posted by an unknown collector, it would have been beat up pretty quickly. I'm not jealous, I just wouldn't want this cap. I don't think that it has received the critical eye that most items get. Ben is clearly excited about this cap and that's fine. How long will Ben be the owner and will this thread be used to help sell it, is a question for the future.

Gents, just a reminder: per the forum rules, let's do our best to avoid making personal comments and to just stick to discussing the item(s). Members are allowed to express their opinions.

Don't worry Dexter, you are not irrelevant.
                            You are spot on.
                            There, you are not alone.

To start with, I like the cap and think it is a nice original. But you have a valid point that certain garments have been accepted as straight-on originals -while the odds were against them- and at the same time, nice originals have been given the thumbs down by the skeptics and so called "experts" way to often in the past.

Re your remarks. The skull would be an early nickle version, and besides that it is not necessarily to be the original one on this cap indeed it might very well be cleaned as well. The cap being a NCO version originally makes the officer chin cord automatically a later upgrade; therefore the location the side buttons are placed is irrelevant IMO.

To sum it up, in the "worst" situation, IMO the insignia could be later additions/replacements, but this judgement is best to be made by Ben who will have the cap in hand.

                                Let's get something straight.

I never asked for opinions on the authenticity of the cap. I'm quite capable of making up my own mind which includes not caring when the current insignia were placed on it. Only the very naive would assume that all SS caps that have survived to this day must still have the badges that were on them since they were first made and worn.

If and when I ever place the cap for sale on the estand, then you are all welcome to voice any doubts you have. Now is not the time and this thread was meant to be a catalogue of known examples and period photos, nothing more.
