In fact, I first wanted to find back a picture I had seen years ago and showing such an aertex "forehead/ear protection band" in wear. Unfortunately, I didn't manage by now.
Anyhow, I can yet share the requested additional pictures.
This item of headgear is known as a "Hindu-Kopfband" or Head-band "Hindu." This was popular item for skiers from the 1920-1940's.
The one posted here looks to be made from wool-elastique...same material used to make Wickelgamaschen. I have a similar one, but it's hand knitted from Feldgrau wool. I'll dig it up and post some photos.
In the German movie, The North Face, available on amazon, Two Gebirgsjagers and two professional Austrian climbers, climb the Iger Mountain in Switzerland, They all wear those under their hats. Its a very good movie, check it out!
A bit on the late too : took me ages to dig mine out. So Mark, I was mislead by the construction, color and material of your head/ears protection, which are very similar to one I own. But they're not the same items obviously, now that I have it in hands (didn't see it for months, if not years).
Here it is anyway, sorry for the fishy pics. It was made by a civilian manufacturer, like it was the case for most of the mountain-specific equipment of the WWII french alpine troops. This one has a front and sides, on the contrary of yours, but was made of a similar elastic-wool material. Without any maker's mark on yours (or a very same item with known provenance), hard to be 100% sure of its origin. But so far, I see no reason to dismiss it.
