M numbers are, I think, a collector invention whereby caps, helmet, tunics etc... have been given a Model number based on the year in which they were introduced, such as M40 tropical peaked field caps, or M36 or second pattern Heer tunic eagles or M35 helmets etc... I might be mistaken, but I think that for most of these items the Germans did not use such a system, though for weapons they did use a similar system, such as P08 for Lugers, MP 38/40 or MG 34 or MG42.

Hopefully if I am wrong, someone will correct my mistakes.

That is correct Jerry, purely a collectors system for identifying different uniform/headgear pieces by year of manufacture/introduction (hence the often confusing M40/41 tropical cap issue - originally made in 1940 but not issued until 1941).
