Well I think people have diffrents toughts about this..

This is a endless discussion but I would like to own KZ items.
We all have our private museum and I think this is a part of the history you can't burn or throw away so why would we?

I pretty much agree with everyone else, not for my collection regardless if it's real or a fake. In a museum would be the best place for it.

This will be a never ending discussion...

        Back to reviewing the cap!

Although I do not like seeing items like this beeing sold as simple collectibles to faceless collectors over the internet, I see no problems owning such items if they happen to come your way. Quite the opposite I think it is one of the more important aspects of WWII, so should not be ignored.

I have posted a similar cap on this thread that may be used for comparison: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=312670

I like it, and would be happy to have it in my collection.

It amazes me that some people associate these items as taboo and should be left alone and be swept under the rug somewhere. I venture to guess that some of these same people would walk over hot coals for some SS Deathshead memorabilia.

Collect with enthusiasm the relics of the perpetrators of the atrocities, yet cringe when presented with the relics of the victims? That, I don't get.

I agree 100%. I would never have said it clearer.

                    Cap

As one other member already stated, it is an endless discussion. This item would not be for my collection either at any price, but on the other hand show me an early 1900's KKK robe and I'd be all over that. So I guess it all depends on personal taste and what one thinks is historically appropriate or not. Alex

I do not cringe to collect them, nor are they taboo to me. I just think they belong in a Holocaust type museum setting, where people go to see that type item who need to be educated or reminded. My Dad was in a German POW camp for over a year...but I don't collect POW items other than his. No interest...although I know the POW as well as the Holocaust history better than multitudes.

Being non-military they hold no mystique for me. To me it is like collecting baseball caps versus military headgear. Many love baseball and fill their special room with stuff and there are even museums of the same type memorabilia. I have owned thousands of pieces of military headgear, and plenty of baseball caps...I just wear the baseball caps out and toss them. I would happily donate them to anyone who collected them. Same with Holocaust items.

                      That is my sentiment.

I understand your point of view Dave, although I do not subscribe to it. I always find it puzzling to see people collecting KZ related items. To me this is nothing more then some kind of morbid flirt with death, pain and suffering. Just my opinion.

I personally would be reluctant to purchase a KZ SS-Totenkopfverbände uniform as well, although I do collect W-SS and Orpo items. The key is that the latter still represent military history and all that it stands for regardless the atrocities some of the men that wore it perpetrated. A cap like the one in this thread has witnessed hell in the most possible way and that is all to it. It is the dark side that should be treated with the outmost respect and indeed should only be displayed in a Holocaust related museum. It has nothing to do with collecting militaria or preserving history from a collectors point of view, neither would be a can of Zyclon B for example. Among the reasons I collect is to keep history alive, being able to "touch" it. What kind of thrill would owning such a KZ cap possibly give me?

Some people... many in fact... would wonder what 'thrill' one could possibly get from owning SS items, and would consider that any such items also belong in a museum and should not be sold.

What about the blood stained Japanese 'meatball' flags, the KIA helmets, the KIA groupings, etc, etc... In the end these are all just items, collect what you want, and don't be so judgmental when 99% of humanity would consider your own interests just as 'dark' and wrong.

Different discussion and beyond what I meant JL. I'm not addressing people in general but mainly the military collectors community. I know all to well what people in general may think of my hobby, especially here in Europe/Holland. I don't try to be judgmental, simply state a fact that certain items should better not be collected IMO. The thin red line if you want to call it, that better should not be crossed.
