The thing that truly amazes me about all these caps is that they rarely, if ever turn up on forums for opinions before or after the auction.

There must be hundreds of bidders quite content in their ignorance and happy to flush their money down the toilet.

I think Ben hit the nail on the head - we always wonder "how ignorant can they be?", but the reality is that there are probably thousands of casual or "closet" collectors out there who have no idea that WAF or WRF or GHW or any other forum exists - that is all alphabet soup to them, and they operate on a 1980's-era level of ignorance when it comes to these items.

I would guess that that is a gross understatement, Don. Forum awareness and/or membership is certainly not a prerequisite to an outstanding and informed collection, but it sure can help. I would bet that less than 1% of all collectors in the USA, alone, have ever logged into one of the popular forums.

I know many that have never bothered.
