    Willy Sprengpfeil black Panzer sidecap

A maker of the Panzer M40 sidecap which never seems to have been discussed in any detail.

This excellent example is on the estand at the moment and I am thinking of making an offer but would like to know how others feel about it because when it comes to black Panzer sidecaps it is all very confusing.

Is this one a nice textbook example to get or in other words a onelooker ?

                  marking look correct to me
Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

Oh I’d like to help; but then I would have to explain why wouldn’t I?

                          Hello Glenn,

I agree that I can not recall ever seeing an eagle applied that way to a sidecap made by the firm of Willy Sprengpfeil but keep in mind that in 1939 they formed a co-operative partnership with Hans Gloy and Gloy sub-contracted out some of their contracts to other Hamburg clothing and hat makers to help get them out of debt and reduce the fixed cost side of their manufacturing operation. I found this in the accounting history of the company This is what we would call today allowing another company to "manufacturing under licence" so that particular eagle may have been done by one of the licenced sub-contract firms.

The stamp is always the version seen in the Panzer sidecaps by this maker and one of three acceptable versions of the Willy Sprengfeil stamp across their production range of the various sidecaps and other soft caps they made. Other versions of their stamp have been reproduced however and this fact is widely published as such thus creating its own form of caution when ever collectors come across it today. ( I need to add a fourth acceptable stamp because I have just remembered the one in the HG black Panzer sidecap which Jack Melvin sold on the estand earlier this year at the end of July but this again may reflect yet another variation because of sub-contracted work done at the time.)

Would be very interested to learn, however, what is wrong with the cut of the cap and how that has been objectively decided based on these images.

Plus what is wrong with the grommets and are they not the zinc type that everybody looks for ?

                          Chris

Wow! Given those pictures, I would be suckered into it.

                              Hello Chris,

On several of these by this maker (and 1940 date) that I know of the insignia was always hand sewn, the stamp not so crude, different type grommets and the cut a bit different (unless it is these photos)

Here is the interior of a 1940 date green one (green or black would make no difference)

Maybe I am just being over skeptical.
