Hello Dan, the cap itself is a fake, the liner and some points in the construction are bad and easy to detect, officer piping and soutage are not originals as well.
I have and have seen on originals pink, yellow, and PZ.PI. pipings, never seen a original with smoke.

Thanks to all who provided feedback.

The gentleman whom I spoke to who has this hat said he received the hat a long while back (no time frame) and for clarification was not aware of what element this hat represented. The description he provided made be assume this was a possible smoke troop (as I have a Green Heer Smoke in my collection that my father brought back). As in the paragraph that started this discussion, I had never seen this type color soutach on a black OS cap before. I was aware of other colors so anything is feasible and, IMO, still can't rule out that perhaps originals do exist.

A couple of questions to Luca, Glenn and others: (definitely not being critical of your observations but looking to be better informed)
      1. we know shoulder boards come in various piping and litzen - why not caps?
      2. we know several tunics & hats can have different wool & linings- why not caps?
      3. do we know when this cap started surfacing?
      4. if someone can provide me some nice & detailed photos showing a good example cap to compare piping, soutache, lining, insignia, etc; this would be very helpful to me. You can send to dandriscoll1@sbcglobal.net

      Many thanks -

Probably possible. I have seen at least 2 veteran Panzer Jackets (field grey), which had dark wine red collar litzen. The veterans didnt know why, and they never had thought about.
Perhaps this was just an ordinary Panzer cap.
