Erel vented Visor - wanted to start collection

    Hi all,
im not only a new collector but this is the first thread I have posted on this fantastic site. My knowledge of these visors is somewhat limited and to be honest ...confused - what with all the fakes you can come across! (please excuse me for this) I love reading all your threads and find them very interesting and between you all you have a fantastic wealth of knowledge about visors. I’m looking to buy a descent (authentic WW11) visor and have to date been to various sites claiming to be selling the real deal. What I am hoping is that someone may point me in the right direction to start off my collection. I am very passionate about this, as you all are and after reading the thread posted "Show your Erel Vented Cockade Caps” I was left speechless and thought this is what i want to start off my collection .So to get back to the point, I am looking to buy an Erel vented visor in an Artillery, Panzer or Infantry (Officer or NCO). If anyone could help me out I would very much appreciate it

Hi Wootars, welcome to the WAF and great thread to start off on, the vented Erel.

Artillery and Infantry examples will be more available than the Panzer and other specialised branches. You also get more of a choice with the Arty and Inf.

Advice given to me many years ago was always buy the best quality examples that you can afford, condition and shape will always boost your investment.

I am an Artillery buff myself, so I am biased towards the red pipings and I have seen some absolute stunners in this farbe and the infantry often yield some very nice "front swine" lookers. It really depends what you want and where you want to source it from.

John and I at MCB Militaria have a few Arty's and Infantry's in stock and I have the best "ONE" example available anywhere condition wise, which comes at a price.

Have a look at the main players Bill Shea's Ruptured Duck and Gerard's Relichunter, plus Peter Von Lukas at Military Antiques Stockholm and a few other outlets that have slipped my mind.

Once you have found one, post it before you buy so we can see and let the others give opinions on price etc.

Also, this is my own opinion and may not be appreciated by others, but I only buy Erel's with the brown reed rod roll over edge at the base of the sweatband where it joins the cap base, some others are in black, but I have noticed that the majority of the prewar and caps viewed to be made up to early 1944 have these brown rollovers, whilst the black ones seem to have appeared later and often appear in caps I wouldn't want. It is personal opinion only and I'm sure others here will have other views, but that is the beauty of this site, discussion.

Keep us up to speed on how you get on.

    all the best

    J T from Militarycapbox

The liner is a little cuttet off. Rest is nice, OK and original. Price is nearly OK. I own a similar hat, in nearly unweared condition. The price was 650.- Euro.
I hope that I have give you some reasons to decide.
              Best Regards

Beautiful cap Hurran, I think the seller would do better on that price.

                  Thanks

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
Thanks J T for the advice.. you have been a great help already and I will be sure to check out MCB. I agree with Turbo and yourself about the earlier Erel's and will be coming back for your opinions before I settle on anything (did not know about the brown rollover) Thanks also Karl for the info with this visor, I appreciate it but think I would pass as the cutoff liner puts me off a bit (although if the makers mark were still on the liner then it may be worth a look) Thanks for your input too Harrah....very nice cap and good pics like this will always help for comparisons.

                    Visor

Whatever you do I think the majority of the guys here will tell you to buy the best quality you can find or simply wait till one comes along. Collecting visors is not something you can jump into and have a large collection of high quality pieces in a couple months, it takes years!! If you buy a visor in less than desirable condition you'd better love it cause in this market you'll be stuck with it unless it's dirt cheap!! I've been looking for a mint Cav & Pz Gren. visor with the right "look" for over 2 years now with no luck. (anybody got one for sale?) Alex

I agree Alex. The collection of good visors will take time and patience, as you say...when I do finally make a purchase Im going to make sure I love it. Thanks for your input. Thanks Ben, Im enjoying being part of this site even without owning a visor yet.
