Non leather visors were quite commonly used on these type hats produced later in the war.
But whether this piping is for jaeger is another matter. It looks more like the admin color to my eye.Comment

Hello David,
It is a very nice visor cap by a very nice tailor. It is made in the style of an early crusher, but is not a true crusher. Technically, they were to be discontinued and replaced by the officers overseas cap, but officers could have a tailor make them what ever they wanted.

I agree with Mike on both counts.
The term "true" crusher (and for that matter the word "crusher") is collector jargon and has no meaning to me now or did it to the Germans then.
IMO this is an alter art or old style field, probably made after the official date that they were "allowed" but an order that seemed universally ignored...even by the most senior General officers.
The visor material is simply a variation and there were several different materials that these visors were made from...leather being one but I have also seen leather like materials used as well as this pressed paper stoff.
I'd bet that this cap feels like it weighs an ounce!?
Look for the lightweight construction and the smaller crown shape proportions.
Forget the the exact visor having to be leather and the cap frame being bendable like a rubber band....those things do not in and of themselves characterize a "crusher".Comment

While I totally agree with the fact that the order was ignored & this gorgeous piece of headgear was considered a Knautschmütze by contemporaries; I would just like to add that General officer's were explicitly excluded from the official wear out date (April 1st 1942). So it's technically absolutely legal for a General to be wearing an Alter Art after this date. In my personal opinion, it is a common late-war, boiled-wool visor, made by Max LINDNER of Munchen, Augustenstr. 7.
It would be very interesting to see if there are any traces of some previous insignias and buttons.

No matter what the orders may have stated, it is a fact that caps were assembled after the withdrawal date using visors and cap bodies often made of substitute materials and to include originally applied woven flatwire insignia and without chincords - all intended to mimic the appearance of the Alter Art.Comment
