Had a question regarding early Luftwaffe use of the Bergmütze (pre-1942). Did the Luftwaffe officers Bergmütze mimic that of army officers? Particularly, would a privately purchased LW officer Bergmütze have silver piping all along or would it be absent like the army officer cap? Apologies if this has already been discussed. I searched quite a few threads and couldn't find the answer. Thanks

Hi there!
If you talk about the piping, if it run all over the upper 'edge' of the dome of the cap, is right, they wore. The thought became without rule on a private tailoring mutze that, as you know, they was sewn as the officer loves to were. But, almost all the time, the CO bergmutze carried the silver piping, mostly on EN/NCO cap they use estensively.
Here's the link with Heinz Bar with its suppose to be an EN/NCO mutze:

Thanks for your reply!
My question came up after looking at many of the Heer officer Bergmutzen on this site and the fact that the earlier examples do not have the silver or gold crown piping (pre-1942, IIRC). I later came across an image of a Luftwaffe Bergmütze made with Trikot fabric but without the piping. It was undated but I was curious if it was a private purchase EM/NCO cap or an unpiped officer cap?
So, would I be correct in believing that a pre-1942 Heer officer Bergmütze (issue or privately purchased) would not have the crown piping and a pre-1942Luftwaffe officer Bergmütze (issue or private purchase) would have it?

Hi there!
I don't think that the early OFF bergmutze wasn't worn with its piping. They could be worn an example w/out the piping because they was supplies with NCO items... in some case, on far operational teathre.
About the trikot, I'm for the first thought: private tailoring NCO caps... For me, there's no reason for an officer wore a non-piping example.
But the way of the possibility are neverending...
