      There is some exposed stiching but it's just where the sewing machine wavered a bit.

        Now for the interior and the bits I like.
        The grey silk lining sits nice and tight and is original to the cap. Notice how the chinstrap button prongs have left an impression on the s/band.

                  Now, the important part and the only real element that has me worried. The pasteboard is plain untreated brown heavy card. The rest of the materials stiched to it are ok with me, all authentic. No polyester thread in this one either, I tested some.
                  So, the only things that are stopping me giving this one a thumbs up right now are the pasteboard and the total lack of natural wear and tear, aging or fading of any part of the exterior.
                  What do you guys think?

                    Good investigation Ben - My only comment is that the overall condition of the cap is very good and that would lean towards the pasteboard being perfect or near perfect.

                    Still be nice to see what the outcome will be.

                      Ben excellent! What is your verdict, you have it in hand. Components appear good, stitching, with light or no wear to the exterior and pasteboard.

                          Ben here is what still doesn’t sit right with me. First off I am seeing one too many PZ SS visors. If one even gives in to the fact they were made after 1940 one has to ask how many? Would a NCO have the leeway to break the regs? Now the construction of the hat and materials look 1939/40. We all know that later in the war the pink piping started to change to more of a vibrant pink. So if I look at this cap and forget it is SS I think 1939/40. There is were I have two problems. There were very, very few SS that could have wore pining piping in 1940 and then the pasteboard. I have seen untreated pasteboard on one maybe two visors I thought were period. They were all very late war caps. I just can’t see an early cap with untreated pasteboard. A lot of the cap looks good construction wise but I still hold doubts it was made prior to 1946. The lining does nothing for me either.

                            The hat is not for me because the exterior colors are wrong. The People who chimed in comparing it's coloration to other period visors that were not SS were and are corrrect. If you like it and are comfy with it put it in your collection, it ain't going in mine.

                              Here is a question that has haunted me from day one. This is based on fact and common sense. The piping we should see the least of on “real” color pipes should be pink. The size of SS panzer troops in 1940 was just about zero. It took them a while to build up PZ divisions. Based on troop size Arty should be the most common color. In fact period photos support this. Now I have never, ever seen an arty piped SS but I see hundreds of PZ. Figure that out.

                                Your right, I have seen numerous photos and one in color that show red piping. I would love to own one. When I talk about coloration anybody that wants to, with a search, might be able to find DougO's pink piped Visor, she is right as rain and a beauty. Uh, and no I do not like pink highlighter piping.
