I will give you detail. First it has a silver grommet. I have only seen brass used. I will keep an open mind on these but it is not the only problem. Next the peak stiffener in not the type traditionally found on these Erel’s. The usually have a folded piece of cloth sewn in as part of the peak stiffener.

Next we have extra holes everywhere. Not only in the lining but also the sweatband.

One more. What in the world could possible have made this hole?

            Thanks Nick,

You would think if they were to go through this much trouble why not go with a more desirable waffenfarbe?

I have no idea? Mabe this one has been restored? Maybe someone had a moth eaten Erel and switched linings? I just don't know. What I do know is that something is not right.

I can see that the bill have been resewn from the photos. I can only guess that the cap must have been crsuhed by some reason and the bill have been changed, the cap may have gotten a new cap stiffener, or maybe not. The interior have for sure been resewn in the front after the change of the bill, that would explain the extra holes in the lining.

Here agin we are, is it a textbook cap = NO. Does that mean it is a fake = NO. Can it still be a fake = Possibly, but definatly not sure.

Does it commend a lower price because of that = YES

I agree the sum of its parts might be ok but that is just too many things wrong for my taste.

Yes, I would most certainly also not buy the cap. Anyhow not by pictures alone, I would naturally need to have it in hand and examine it.

But still, that does not make it a definitive fake. I think it is time we start to be a bit careful with the judgements.

                      Not textbook = Not Original.

Naturally many items can be deemed as fakes by pictures alone, but those who can not with 100% certainity I think it is enough we point out all anomalities we can see. Usually a hand on inspection is needed to positivly say something is not original. Today to many "experts" tend to do it by pictures alone which is dangerous.

Jusat point out the problem areas and that would be enough for any collector to make up his mind if he want to buy a cap which is non textbook or not.

One thing I would like to clear up regarding two of the caps turbo posted is the nickel-plated grommet thing. Out of all the Erel’s I have ever owned, seen, examined that were original NONE had nickel-plated grommets. All have been brass. All of a sudden two pop up. Can anyone post a pic of an original Erel with a nickel-plated grommet? If these did exist on period Erel's I would like some proof of it.

One more comment. Both visors that had the nickel plating were doggy.

Yes, that is a very intersting aspect. I will look in my archives and see if I have any cap with that sort of grommet, I doubt it though.

I don't see anywhere in this thread where someone stated this cap was a fake, period. You can see that this cap obviously has been played with and altered, from it's original state. And as for saying Not Textbook - Not Original. Some people may think that, but I'm sure the majority would disagree with that statement.
