It looks like the Skull's been there for quite a while ..nice and tight, slight shadow but that could be from some rust stain.

          Hat

          Greetings,

Machine sewn 1940 insignia on a 1935 dated hat doesn't set to well with me.I don't like the type of waffenfarbe let alone the later signal color (Lemon yellow) on a cavalry maked hat. I can't say anthing about the hat itself but the insignia is all wrong.

The only thing I could think of was ...maybe he was attached to a Panzer unit ? I'd love to find a period photo showing a similar example.

Here's the Liner behind the Eagle ..not sewn through. And there's no sign of the seam being opened up to stitch that bird on

                      Very interesting.

The cover does have the later style eagle & cockade. However, notice the stiching to the eagle, it's applied in the proper manner. Folded over and stiched.

Can't wait to hear other members thoughts.

                      Cheers,
                      Howard

Kind of need better photos. But if it is correct it would be a rare hat, unit marked to the 5th Kav regt. which had a skull device as their unit emblem. Hard to tell from the photos though... I have my doubts, regarding the markings and also the type of insignia sewn on this cap.
