IMO that buckle has never been in the ground. There are many things that it would relect if that had been the case and this one show none of the signs.
It is a typical well worn early buckle. The paint color looks almost brown in the light of the photo, I would guess that it is actually feldgrau....If brown it is tropical.
Somewhat better photos. I can't see any reason for it being ground dug except the scratch between M and I in MIT (not very visible in the photo) and all the yellowish brown residue, which might be mud, I'm not sure.

HI DAIMYO THIS BUCKLE IS DEFENETLY NOT GROUND DUG IF IT WHERE YOU WOULD NOT MAKE ANY DETAIL OUT AS IT WOULD BE A CORRODED LUMP OF ALLOY YOU WOULD HAVE INSTEAD OF A BUCKLE..... YOUR BUCKLE IS FINE & GENUINE IMO............CHEERS SWEEZZ.

I HAVE SEEN A PEICE OF ALLOY THAT CAME OUT OF THE GROUND BEFORE AFTER ONLY A COUPLE OF YEARS AND IT WAS VERY BADLY CORRODED INDEED AND TURNING TO A POWDERY LUMP....... THIS BUCKLE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE IT HAS BEEN IN THE GROUND FOR A WEEK NEVER MIND NEARLY SEVENTY YEARS COME ON GUYS ITS ALLOY NOT GOLD.......DEFINETLY NOT GROUND DUG COS THE CONDITION IS TOO GOOD FOR IT TO BE IMO.........CHEERS SWEEZZ.
