Is it possible that they might be wearing pieces of Allied uniform, that is, judging by the captured Dodge weapons carrier in the background?

It's odd that one guy's is on the right arm and the other guy has one on the left. Do you know what country the photo was taken in?

The Guy has tropical boots and a tropical cap on and the news paper story suggests Africa. I thought perhaps captured US jackets to keep them warm ??? Rob

Thanks Robb, I'm thinking Italian. I believe some of them wore shoulder insignia during WWlI but I haven't been able to find a picture yet. The only other thing besides your suggestion of captured uniforms might be they are POWs.

Couldn't the insignia on the right arm guy be an edelweiss? just a guess...

Not the same shape or uniform position and I don't think they had tanks in the mountains corps . Good idea though . Rob

Well, I believe some Gebirgjäger units did have AFV...but just don't think they were PzKpfw VI. Anyhow, there was some Gj unit in Northen Afrika and someone could have borrowed the tunic. Being a Tiger I can imaging it is Tunisia 1943.

Pic shows an edelweiss a bit too high on a Gj's pullover, seems to be Northen Africa...

The companion images to your image showing the replacement of the Maybach HL210 engine in “Tiger” №141 (Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf. (E) 1st company of the 501st heavy tank battalion (s.Pz.Abt.501)

I believe its just a bad negative as the other images clearly show no insignia on the uniform shoulders for this crew.

These are part of a Bundesarchiv series and generally their wartime negatives suffer from scratches, overdeveloped or underdeveloped areas, white spots and are not always in the best of condition given the circumstances of enduring WWII.

Here you can see there is no patch. Just an overdeveloped area among the other imperfections.

Standard Kahki side caps being worn, by, I suspect a Yeomanry Regt. The guy on the left is wearing a very very squashed version.
