Mystery Drive Wheel - identification required please

...mate of mine picked this up recently and hasn't been able to match it to a vehicle. 'been suggested that it's from an RSO but he thinks it's got too many 'teeth'. Although it's heavily damaged (mine? shell?) it does not seem that there was a second ring of 'teeth' on the back. There is a number stamped on the inner ring (5838 02) and the piece measures just under 24 inches at the widest point (from the tip of the 'teeth') and just under 16 inches on the inside of the ring.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks for looking

sprocket mystery solved

Hi again

This is the very same torn sprocket I saw at the la Gleize fair in June....i didn't take a pic because I knew it wasn't wartime German.
Now that we have a pic, I did some checking.....and it is German but postwar

it is the sprocket from a HS 30 Schützenpanzer ( or variant on that chassis)






An RSO sprocket has 12 teeth and the HS30 has 14 teeth...but there is a resemblance I must admit

Many thanks indeed to Bullitt and Vince for your help with this one. I've passed the info onto my mate and he is delighted! (he collects all period parts so not being WW2 doesnt matter).

He still thinks it underwent so trauma, and I agree......perhaps a Range Target???
