    101. Schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung LAH

    Dear All,

I'm looking for all informations about the tigers lost (I think there were six) in the days between 6 and 12 June from the 2 Kompanie of the 101. Schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung LAH commanded by Michael Wittmann.

I'm looking in particular for the tiger numbers and days of their loss and the names of members of those tigers if possible and/or the names of the wounded soldiers.

    Please can anybody help me??

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Roberto

Sure, but during their journey they suffered heavy air attacks and in date 10th June the company counted (I think) 4 wounded...I would like to know more details of these wounded and their tigers...

        Cheers,
        Roberto

              Roberto,

Do you have the German or English version of Agte's book? In the English version on pages 315-316 he talks about the 2. Kompanie and others being strafed near Argentan on 10.06.44, and lists some wounded, but doesn't say anything about tanks being lost. He talks about how some of the tanks shot down a US fighter-bomber with their tank commander MG34s.

This is on pages 190-191 of the German version.

              Best,
              Greg

                Hi Greg,

thank you for your reply! First my compliments for your interesting website

I saw the pages of Agte'book...but not the details you wrote...very interesting...but I hope to find some more detailed infos...and in particular about the SS-Sturmmann Rudolf Larndorfer that I think he was wounded in that days.

                Many thanks.

                Cheers,
                Roberto

Checked my references... I do not have any detailed info regarding specific Tigers or names of crew lost/wounded on those days.

I've read a number of books on this over the years, and I don't recall any reporting of any Tigers lost by the 2nd/101st prior to 12 June. My recollection is that only six were in the Hill 213 area on the morning of 13 June, and of those, three were incapacitated by mechanical issues. Wittmann's own tank wasn't even there, as it had broken down en route: he commandeered another one that day for his own use.

This is a very hard area to research, because, unless a tank burned (causing the armor to be compromised, the suspension to melt, the ammo and fuel to explode, the hydraulics to burn, and the interior fittings to fuse together), it was repairable. Return figures confirm that many German tanks that were "knocked out" in Normandy were recovered and repaired, provided they hadn't caught on fire... which is why German anti-tank doctrine called for firing on a target until it burned to ensure its complete destruction. Again, I don't think any Tigers of the 101st were completely lost during the march to the Normandy front: many were temporarily incapacitated, but mostly - if not solely - due to mechanical issues. I too would be very keen to learn of any Tigers that were 100% destroyed prior to engaging in combat.

If my memory is correct Agte says (not in his book) that Wittmann's Tiger '205' broke down on the way to the front and was not able to be repaired and thus never saw action in Normandy.

Hello Roberto,if you want a detailed combat diary of any Tiger Abteilung I suggest you read Wolfgang Schneiders "Tigers in Combat" volumes I and II,volume II deals with the Schwere SS Panzer-Abteilung 101,and it states,June 7th 2./schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 101 and Maintenance Company are hit with air strike near Versailles.
June 8-2./ schwere SS-Panzer-Abteilung 101 continue road march via Verneul-l'Aigle,from there the 2./schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 101 moves via Argentan to Falaise.
June 9- During the next few days road marches are only conducted at night.
June 10- 2./schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 101 is strafed by fighters in Argentan,a short while later it is hit from the air again at Occagnes.1 air craft is shot down by SS-Unterscharfuhrer Warmbrunn with anti-aircraft machine gun fire, they arrived in Falaise later that night.
June 12- 2./schwere SS-Panzer Abteilung 101(six tigers) assembles in a defile south of Montbrocq(two km's northeast of Villers-Bocage) as mentioned in earlier responses it does not look like any Tigers were lost in those few days,if you get a chance read these books they are excellent .
