Found a nice vehicle part... what is it...

Well, got this a long time but never tried to find out what it is. Someone said it could be for the weals from a plane, others said from the transmission of a car.

Has a little waa marking on it, and still has paint remains.

Looks like a steering gear box with part of the steering column.

looks like a part from a artillery gun rather than a car part

I agree that it looks like part of an elevation or traverse mechanism from an artillery piece. From the damage it looks like it may have been blown off the gun.

Looks too flimsy for a steering column and too many links that would make it prone to breakage if put under load.

The locking wire on the gear case would indicate that it was subject to vibration. From experiance with weapons I can tell you that we still use locking wire (I have worked on 4.5", 5", 40mm and currently the 76mm Oto Melara) today to counteract the vibration of the shock wave created by rounds out.

Even the grease nipple and fitting for it are typical of what we still use. Basic mechanical priciples don't change. I have seen fittings similar to this on the various gun systems I have maintained.

I have worked on old cars for years and I have never seen a steering shaft like that. Older vehicles from that era tend to have thick solid steering shafts that go straight from the steering wheel into a steering gear box.

Good photos mate, but still can't tell you exactly what it is.

Could be a traverse gear, could be a feedback arm, a "remote" for opening a hatch/cover, the list could go on and on.

I note that its fitted with universal joints for flexibility, what is on the end of the shaft after the uni-joints? It looks as if it could have been fitted with a handle.

Could very well be true.

Also, see second picture... Something whas sawn off. If I move the handle, that sawn off thing moves.
