New Wound Badge in Black

Hi. I recently bought this wound badge in black.

It is stamped and made of brass. The black finish is heavily worn. It looks real to me. What do you guys think?

Phew! Thanks Philip. I'm glad I got a good one. I hate second guessing myself I was pretty sure it was right and then I had doubts. That's why I like this forum so much. I can post it and let everyone else have a good look.

Thanks for your thoughts on it. Next up, a gentle wipe clean, some ren wax and into the collection it goes!

Why? IMO i doesn't need it, just leave it the way it is...... you should only do this ( again IMO) if there's some type of corrosion going on...... and it looks like you got a happy healthy badge there

Why wax

Hi Mike

I only use a dry lint free cloth to remove any dirt or dust. I then apply a thin layer of Ren. wax to prevent any corrosion or rust from forming. I like to think I am preserving these badges for the future.

I don't do any aggressive "cleaning" using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals. Just a wipe and a wax.

Hey, it is yours to do with as you wish...but IMHO it would be a shame to treat it at all...looks great...it obviously is a worn decoration with a story of its own and shows well.

Reasoning

I've received a few replies suggesting I leave the badge untouched. So I thought perhaps I should explain myself.

The reason I have a preference for gently wiping clean a badge using just a soft cloth and then putting a thin layer of ren. wax on it is to prevent oxidation / rust from forming. If I wait until it oxidises / rusts it's too late!

The invention of ren. wax was brought about because the British Museum and other similar institutions were looking for a product to treat and preserve antiques for future generations. The ren. wax protects and prevents deterioration of artifacts. That's why I use it...so there!
