Ok, either you guys are pulling my chain or you need to act on VerKuilen's number one rule of collecting German stuff: go out and buy yourself a very good German-to-English dictionary. I recommend a Cassell's.

A "sängerbund" is a singing club. There were a zillion of them prior to W.W.II. Hence the lyre in the design, which was a very common symbol among these groups. Lyre? Who's a lyre? Who vas on erst? etc., etc.
