Trier 1933 Questions ???

I've been researching the 1933 Trier tinnie. I've concluded that this was a tinnie given for the pligrimage to see the Holy Robe in Trier. Maybe I'm right, maybe wrong too!! Questions abound: 1. Is it for the pilgrimage?, 2. Who issued it (the Church, the town, or government)?, 3. Was the tinnie a donation type or just a religious souvenier? Any help with these questions is very much appreciated. Any history on this tinnie is helpful!

Todd, I believe your right. The tinnie in question is a pin commemorating the pilgrimage to Trier in 1933 to view the Holy Robe. I would say by it's lack of any political symbolism that it was sold by the city to help pay for the cost of accommodating over 2 million visitors. The main reason for tinnies was to help raise money to finance either the party or the group putting on the festivities or put money in the city coffers.

I found this link to our trier-tinnie( I have one too). Interesting to know that on the booklet is mentioned; "Im heilige Jahre 1933" (in the holy year 1933). I think it's a equivalent to the holy year 0 ( Christ Birth);The Nazis claimed their victory-year,when came to power 1933,to be holy! A good example of manipulating, how the nazis linked their bisness with general accepted facts of christianity, which gives a familiar feeling to the people.

This was civil, religious souvenir and not connected to the Nazis.

"Sieg heil" translates as "To Victory!" or "Hail Victory!". Not to be confused with "heilig" (holy), which is an entirely different word.

Correct Ager, this Trier tinnie wasn't directly at first plan connected to the nazis; it is ment as a religious tinnie, but..........the nazi's used in this pilgrim booklet( belonging to this cross-tinnie) the words " in the holy year 1933 " What can be holy in 1933? What can be impotant in 1933? Nothing religious as far as I know; in 1933 the nazis came to power ; I think that is the link they made to catholicism.

Ben, This is the original reason for the pin and why 1933 is considered a holy year

A robe said to have been worn by Christ during his lifetime is preserved in a specially constructed chapel behind the main altar of the church. For a time the robe was displayed and pilgrimages took place every 7 years beginning in 1517. Those displays became the occasion of pilgrimages to the cathedral of Trier. Thereafter the displays became much more restricted. The largest number of visitors coming to see the robe was in 1933 when 2 million people came. In earlier days the robe was hung in the open for viewing. At the last exposition in 1996, it was displayed in a climate controlled glass case to help to prevent further deterioration.
