Saar Gau tinnie on the estand

I have a question on this offering.

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=417717

This looks very similar to a tinnie that is commonly sold for $30-$35. See post 81 in the below thread. I also have two of these that I bought for less than $30 each from a friend in Germany.

    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11763&highlight=saar+tinnie&page= 6

Was there some special type of "Gau" badge with this exact design, and which is being sold here, that would be worth this price or is this merely a "day" badge at an extremely unrealistic price?

There was a fancy silver cased presentation piece. , don't know who or what it was for but it made the rounds at the shows for a couple years before someone finally bought it.

The one from the for sale ad,,,that's a regular $30 to $50 tinnie type.. I guess if you don't know what your buying you deserve to pay that price..........

If the piece offered isn't something special and only worth $50 at most, I don't think that a lack of knowledge should mean you get screwed. Many here believe what is offered on this website has a certain safety to it because so many can chime in to dispute the price or authenticity.

I do think that if you sell and have collected for years, you should be very aware of the price of what you are selling and to offer something at $375 when it is commonly sold for $30 is not a very ethical thing to do. Sure, if you are a buyer, you should gain some knowledge about what you buy before you buy it, but this website should be a self policing one benefitting collectors not dealers.

Now if this piece turns out to be something special, that is a different story. But I have yet to see this same badge in any form that is valued at the price being asked. However if this piece is nothing but a $30 tinnie, I would find it difficult to trust the seller in any future transaction.

It's nice to see this thread. I'm glad you brought it up, Richard. I've also been scratching my head about this for the last few days since it sold for a whopping $375.00. I just bought an original one at the recent SOS for the fair $35.00 price mentioned here by others. I would also really like to know if there is a special something about the one that sold here for $375.00, at least for my own education (if not just as much for the education of others).

            Thanks,

            Chris

P.S. Richard, I also agree with all of what you said above about ethics, etc. I did not repeat it, since I could not have said it better. In the best scenario, this should be a community that works to monitor such things and even protect others who know less.

Too bad the old sales thread is down, we could have posted this link in it...

Yes, that would certainly have been helpful. With it being gone, there is little that can be referenced about it.

It would be great if the seller would see this and comment, in order to clear things up. Maybe even the buyer knows something about this we don't know. At this point, I'm at least curious about what made this Saar badge so much more valuable than the average $35.00 type.

                    Chris

P.S. I'll say again how glad I am to see something like this be discussed here by those who care. When there is such a tremendous (and I do mean TREMENDOUS) discrepancy between known value and sale prices here on the e-stand, it is ruly something to be discussed.

I know the seller has been a member here for quite some time but can't remember his name. My fear is that someone new to the hobby now owns a very expensive tinnie for which he will never recover his buying price.

The seller in question has been contacted by myself, and hopefully we will be able to resolve this issue.

                          Hi Guys,

This concern has now been completely resolved with the seller giving a refund to the buyer.

I can further assure you there were no untoward intentions regarding this sale either.

                          Thank you all very much,

                          Marcus

Thanks for following up on this Marcus. The member that had sold this badge has been a member in good standing for a long time, so no one suspected him of doing anything untoward. I think most assumed it was a lack of knowledge on the tinnie.

                              the gau badge on estand

                              Note to all:

After 37 years of collecting, I was switching my focus from combat badges to some of the political ones. I thought obtaining some gau badges would be an interesting sideline and liked the look of this one.

I appreciate the efforts of the members to keep the hobby aboveboard. I, like many have a tin full of mistakes, and also many items that never arrived over the course of my collecting years.

However, as a historican and having great interest in Third Reich items, it doesn't diminish the thrill and fun of obtaining a new treasure.

My thanks to all, and my regards to the buyer, who acted as a gentleman and tendered a full refund on his own initative.
