    Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter

Last night I purchased my first militaria object, a mother's cross (Das Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter) from a collector in Sweden. (I start off in a modest way.)
I believe the price was right, €19, the cross in bronze.
Hopefully I'll recieve it in the mail box by tomorrow.

As a newbie, I'll probably "jump" onto fakes and make bad buys.

Are there some things in particular (regarding mother's crosses) to watch more carefully for when distinguishing a fake from real? Typeface, difference in color, surface?

Finally, did these awards originally come with a document attached?
Was there any ceremony when it was handed over?

Many thanks in advance. Great forum you have!

I'll post a few close-up photos as soon as I get it for further examination.

    Welcome to the forum!
First thing to do is be careful with what you buy. I would recommend you to post here first every time you are willing to buy, before doing it, so that the guys can help you regarding authencity.
Not knowing much about mother's crosses, ive seen many collectors here poiting some things when it comes to fakes, like enamel colour, bronze/silver/gold finish, general look, the size of the white lines in the borders, materials, and those things..
They also check out the inscriptions on the back, how good is the lettering, etc.
Although as far as im concerned mother's crosses arent heavily faked, you have to still be careful with them. Not a 100% fake clear area (though i dont think there is any total fake clear area in Third Reich collecting)

The awards were, indeed, awarded in a ceremony, and im not sure if all three classes came with documets, but ive seen some, so i would think they all came with documents, but they are rare to find anyway.
Although some sellers are selling all three classes cased, i think the only cased class was the gold one, and the other ones came in paper packets. All with ribbons. You may also find miniature mother's cross, of all three classes, very rare pieces.

    Mother's crosses in wear thread..

You have made a good decision joining a forum, do your homework, read, read, read and read, buy reference books and use the forum as much you can, it will save you a lots of money.

Also buy from people/dealers who gives you the right to return stuff.

Do not buy from the guy on the corner in for example Gamla Stan.

As far as I know their was some kind of ceremony. Their exist a lot of pictures of mothers with the cross and I once saw a documentary with a small scéne at the moment an officia put al mother cross around the neck. However in my opinion many of these crosses were put in the drawer afterwards. I think it were rather the die hards who wore them the whole time.

Today my mailman dropped an envelope in my mail box!
However, I realize when taking, or trying to, take some photos, that I better get that close-up extension tube for my EOS. Here are some photos anyway.
          (Click for fullsize).
How do I post fullsize straight into the reply post?
