    Meinshausen plaque

    Hello all,
I have a nice little award for model gliding(?) I believe, & wonder if I can get a better translation of what the reverse of the award says and also if anyone can decipher what the reverse of the box for the award says. If anyone cares to see the front of the piece I will put one in, you're only allowed to put in two pics per comment.

Any help or info about this award is appreciated.
    Thanks for looking

      Hi Bill,

Here's my translation of the medallion's reverse:

Second Prize for Building Glider Models
      Flying District IX Elimination (Competition)

I've never seen another example of this medallion, so that's all I can offer here. A very nice piece, though, especially including the box -- congrats!

      Cheers and Happy Holiday,

      Br. James

Brother James and Gerdan, I thank you both for your comments and info. Any ideas as to what the reverse of the case says or what the B on the bottom reverse of the item means?
as always your help is appreciated

I think I have to correct: it is Oberschöneweide, part of Berlin.

              Hello,

Gerdan thank you again for your info. I saw the Berlin bear but didn’t know about a specific area. Also, the letter B on the reverse bottom of the coin, any idea what the is in reference to? Again, thanks.
Here’s some info I had found the other day regarding this piece. The link is to the website which is in German. I tried to put a link in with a translation but every time I did that the page came up in German anyway. I apologize for the amount of following text. I am not quite sure what the wording at the end regarding Round, not acceptable bronze medal with raised, narrow edge. Don't know whether that's just something in the translation or what because of the few I have seen they all look alike. In any case here is the info:
              http://www.ehrenzeichen-orden.de/nat...egen-1938.html
              English Translation:
This medal was donated by Dr. Hans Meinshausen in 1937 as a prize for the competitions of the Berlin school youth at the "Meinshausen-Fliegen". Hans Meinshausen (1889 - 1948) had been a student council in Berlin-Charlottenburg since 1926. After his entry into the NSDAP he was suspended and dismissed because of his commitment to the party. After the establishment of the National Socialists, he was appointed as State Commissioner for the performance of the business of the city council on 13 March 1933. In 1937, the funeral battles of the Berlin school youth were created in model aircraft construction and flying. These should increase interest in aviation and its development. Since November 17, 1934, flight proficiency was a subject in the Volksschule. The competitions took place in different disciplines. We have been awarded for the construction of glider models, motor-driven models, flight prices for gliding models and motor-driven flight models and high-performance flying models. Other categories are possible but not known to me. Prize medals were awarded in 3 stages 1st, 2nd and 3rd home races and / or air fare. The medals until 1938 were bronze. Later medals were made of silver-plated zinc. The back of the bronze medals have a closed laurel wreath. The zinc medals have only two laurel branches down below the middle. The respective price and discipline are engraved in the open field. The weight varies from 24 g (bronze) to 7.4 g (zinc). The organization of the competitions probably ended with an outbreak of war.
Round, not acceptable bronze medal with raised, narrow edge.
              Front:
              • On the margin a broad, raised writing ring. On top of this - MEINHAUSEN - - - FLYING.
              • On the right and left, the Berlin coat-of-arms with a wall-crown.
              • Engraved at the bottom - 1938 -. The enclosed field deepened.
              • In the middle stands a boy in a long shirt with chest pockets and short trousers.
              • In his spread hands he holds an upright flight model.
              thanks
              Bill

Very nice medallion Bill. I have one as well but for 1940 and without the nice box. My guess as to the meaning of the B is that together with the II it stands for Baupreis II. That way they likely would not have to look inside the box to figure out what medallion is for which prize when handing them out.

Mine is for 1st place in the elimination/qualifying (not exactly sure which would be the best translation for Ausscheidungsfliegen) for the flying of models in the Group IV category.

                  Curt,
Nice looking piece you have & thanks for the comment about mine. I haven't seen many of these at all over the years, don't know whether they are common or what but they certainly have a nice look about them. It's actually been an item I've looked for for awhile.
Thank you much for the info about the B on there. I just didn't know whether there was some specific meaning to it having a letter B on it. Thanks for the translation you get on yours also. I'm sorry I never took German in school. The translations I usually get from google and stuff, while giving me the jist of what it is, usually doesn't give me the exact wording or meaning unfortunately. Glad to see another one like it here.
                  thanks
                  Bill
