on further thought about the 'odd proportions,' I remembered one of the most famous of all 3rd reich icons shares this trait whose wreath if anything is ever 'odder' in proportion to the eagle i.e., the DE standarte finial...!

Actually, the DE wreath/eagle/swastika was designed by AH (like that of the masthead of the early VB newspaper and on Mein Kampfs)--the size of the swastika and wreath make sense from a design standpoint. So, the proportions of the DE and early eagle/wreath/swastika are the standard, so to speak.
