These have been around for years, a common fake. These disks never had RZM type numbers on the front (or back)

these are faked so much that anytime you have to ask yourself, is this fake, you can bet it is.

                  Jeff-
Wonderful Historic Items. The Fakes Of These Go Back To The 70's. One Must Wonder Who The Men Were That Possesed These Id Discs And What Horrors They Perpetuated On Their Fellow Man.

I'm curious as to how these were used. Were these actually used as an ID and if so, why a form of ID that really can't ID the person? If you lost one of these, it seems just anyone could pick it up and use it. Was this all that was needed by a Gestapo man to more or less say "I'm Gestapo". It also seems like a cumbersome and inefficient ID method rather than an ID card of some sort.

Each disc had a matching ID card but the disc alone was all that was required to arrest, search, etc...
They were only required to show those ID's to other officials, not the public or arrestee....for those unlucky ones a disc was all that was required.
This method...the disc...was used long before the Nazi's (and used after they were gone as well).
The penalty for impersonating or using a disc was death, so not much of a problem with that.
Don Bible has some great books on the subject and a good web site here:

Thanks for the education Jeff. I had always wondered about these. It seems this type of ID was unique to the Gestapo. Thanks for sharing the pic by the way. I always enjoy the superb bits of your collection you share on here.

The Gestapo used these as well as State and Local police (and others as I recall). Of the 3 I have pictured, only the one on the left is Gestapo, the 2 on the right are State Police. The Local police disc are actually the hardest to find.....
                          Thanks Richard!

Most know, but some may not:

Geheime StaatsPolizei = Secret State Police

Here are three police discs showing use in Imperial, Weimar and Post-War occupied Germany.
