Regarding the composition of Pz. Rgt. 39 :
In 1941/42 the I.Abt. consisted of two light (1.-2.) and one medium Pz. Kp. (3.).
The 1. Kp. should have had a Kp. Trupp (2 Pz III), 1 light platoon (5 Pz II) and 3 platoons (each with 5 Pz. III),
for a total of 5- Pz II and 17- Pz. III (all w. 5cm) (so the "light co." had not only light Pz.).
And just from statistics it is more likely that he fought in a Pz. III.

    Regarding the actions :
From late Jan. - April 1942, 17. Pz.Div. fought at various locations N and NW of Orel.
It seems that it was used as "fire brigade" with several battlegroups formed to support
    other divisions (29. ID(mot), 211. ID ...).
The map in the link shows just an example where it was close to 296. ID :

I think this backs up the interesting comments by PanzerElite and hopefully adds some info on his unit.

    Best regards,
