I wonder if the Checkerboard pattern on the stick indicates one of the Croatian Squadrons/Units within the Luftwaffe?

Hard to say but cannot rule it out as transfers and volunteers came from all branches of the Luftwaffe. The photos from Dec 19 - 01 through Jan 20 -01 were out of the same grouping of Luftwaffen-Jäger-Regiment 10 / 10.LWFD. It was common to see photos of soldiers carryning Wolchow sticks in the swamps and marshes around Leningrad.

I wonder if the Checkerboard pattern on the stick indicates one of the Croatian Squadrons/Units within the Luftwaffe?
