Mike, Many of the soldiers were happy to be out of danger and the horror of the war....there were still some fanatical Nazi's among them and of course discipline was still the order of the day.

It seems in the books and programs on tv portray the germans early in the war as reluctant POW's and evil nazis. It is nice to see peroid photos that debunk that perception...... Mike

In # 307 photo, these German soldiers had tried to pass for the allied lines with Italians civil clothes....but they had forgotten to take off yours military mountain boots.

Those pants looks alot like modified StuG field trousers (but that's implausibly) so I would say field made olive or faded trousers... (like on p. 111 in Jean de Lagarde's book "German uniforms from 1939-45")

But I'm not 100% sure...
