Not exactly a KO'd armored vehicle but an interesting captured civilian or Military camoflaged staff car now with American markings on it.

Blown Up Jagdtiger - found!
This location has finally been identified - nowhere near Schwetzingen or the River Sieg, and not s.Pz.Jgr.Abt. 512 (as stated in Devey's book). This vehicle was abandoned and blown up on the outskirts of Etterschlag, west of Munich (see posts 397-403 of this thread ... page 27+).
For modern photos of the location see www.thirdreichruins.com/spjabt653.htm (bottom of page).

Originally posted by Geoff WaldenThere are several other views of this same vehicle, some of which show a village in the background. The thinking has been that this was a s.PzJgr.Abt. 653 vehicle of the 1.Kp. that was destroyed by its crew outside Eppelheim, near Heidelberg. BUT, I spent several hours driving around Eppelheim and the area this past summer, and I could find no match to these photos that show the background. A church tower shows in these photos, and there is a tower somewhat like that in Eppelheim, however, there is a large distinctive water tower close by, that would definitely show in the period photos if that was Eppelheim, and it isn't there. I do not believe now that this vehicle was in the Eppelheim/Heidelberg/Schwetzingen area.
(See this thread for some of the images showing the background -
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=63409 )
I am almost certain (as certain as I can be) that Devey's assigment of this vehicle to the 2/512 near the River Sieg is also wrong. There is no evidence whatsoever that my father was anywhere near that part of Germany (or, really, near Heidelberg, for that matter). However, my father WAS near the area of Rosenheim and Erlstätt, near Chiemsee, where several vehicles of 653 were destroyed in early May 1945, before the surrender. My father's photos show that he traveled frequently through this area (he had a Fräulein in Berchtesgaden ), and he had ample opportunity to photograph this vehicle, if that's where it was. I haven't had a chance to hunt that area yet, looking for the background buildings.

Tiger Tank Story
My neighbor across the street from me was a Russian Tank Commander.
He said one night they were on of 47 Russian Tanks which came apon 4 Tiger Tanks right before the sun went down.
They figured they would fight the Germans in the morning.
When the sun came up the four German Tiger Tanks had moved during the night and opened up on them at sunrise.
The four German Tigers engaged his unit of 47 Russian Tanks. The four tigers knocked out all of his 47 tanks.
His driver and loader were killed. He then showd me the deep scars on his leg from the battle wher he was wounded.
He speaks little English and is Armenian.
Anyways that was his story.
