Its a Panzer IV

Nice photo you have there.

I think you'll find its just a single tank and I believe its a Panzer IV ( Ausf G or H). What looks like has happened is its had an internal explosion which has ripped off the whole top of the hull, with the turret still attached and flipped it over. So the bick square opened space is actually the roof of the upper hull upside down. Were you can see the cross, is the curved schurtzen going around the back of the turret and thye rear stowage box.

I believe Chris is right...I don't see a second set of tracks anywhere and I took a closer look. Chris is right on saying the turret is upside down due to a internal explosiion which blew it off along with a good porton of the hull of the Panzer. Bill

Here are a couple of photos of a Jagdtiger, probably blown up by the crew. Taken by my father, a US Army Air Corps 2LT, probably early in 1946. (There's another Zoomie looking at knocked out tanks for ya, Bill, but Daddy was in the Occupation Army and was just a tourist, not part of an assessment team! )

Daddy unfortunately didn't record the location, but this may be a vehicle of 1. Kompanie schwere Panzerjäger Abteilung 653 near Schwetzingen (west of Heidelberg). I've never been able to pin it down. Devey's Jagdtiger book (which I don't have) may say something different.

Great pics!! I'm not sure if those pics were taken near Schwetzingen. I was stationed and lived there for quite some time. My friend Karl-Heinz Muench wrote the book on Schwere Panzerjaeger Abteilung 653 and one of your pics is in his book. I attached a scan below.

Both my photos have appeared in print before, because when we were kids my brother and I used to trade copies around to other armor enthusiasts, and quite a few people had them. My brother thinks this location was between Schwetzingen and Eppelheim, but he has never been able to find exactly where. Construction has changed the area.

Does the Muench book give the location? I can't read the scanned page.

You didn't even get credit in Karl-Heinz's book apparently Devey took credit for that photo. One of the reasons why I say I don't think it was near Schwetzingen is that Karl-Heniz doesn't mention a location and He lives in Schwetzingen!! He presented me with a signed copy of his book...I use to supply him with alot of Panzer photos and so did another American friend Jim Haley who lives nearby in Ketch. Actually we still furnish him photos. I have another copy of his other book on Schwere Panzerjaeger Abteilung 654 which I will have to fly over to Germany and pick it up one of these days. I will ask Karl-Heinz about the photo and location. Bill

greg, on page 254 of andrew deveys book jagdtiger intop left hand corner it show same tank from the front lefthand side[ plate310 ]
it also shows your dads picture.
the caption states ( side view of blown-up jagdtiger from 2/512 near river sieg.
it also states the two tanks were damaged by fighterbombers and blown up
reguards

Posting a pic that I found at the Franklin show last Friday. A Flak88 gun knocked out at what appears to be an LW Airfield....many bombs stacked in the background. Not a good location for a Flak gun.
