    Feldpost number

    Hi,
need some help with a Luftwaffe feldpost number. The envelope is franked 25.2.43. On the back the sender has written L36857 Breslau. (I believe he was training to be a fighter pilot at that time). On the front is a stamp with what looks like L49022. The recipient lived in Graz. Also around this date he was posted to J.G.52.

    Many thanks

      Feldpost Number

Many thanks for the quick reply. Bit odd with the gap in the feldpost dates and the actual post date. I know the man was with a flak unit, but that was in '41 before he commenced flying duties. Perhaps, the Fliegerhorst postnumber was his training unit, but it would appear to be for people going to North Africa/Italy.

      A mystery.

      Thanks again.

The dates in the brackets are not the start & end dates that the particular feldpost number was used by that unit. They are the dates that the number came into force for that unit.
So for the first one it didn't end in 1942 and wasn't used again until 1943, it came into force during the dates in the brackets and remained with that unit until the next date in brackets when it was possibly reallocated/struck off/remained with a unit when it was renamed.
For the first one here is the full listing...

        (Mobilmachung-1.1.1940) 2. Batterie Reserve-Luftsperr-Abteilung 203,
        (30.7.1941-28.2.1942) 2. Batterie Luftsperr-Abteilung 203,
        (12.3.1943-7.9.1943) 2. Batterie Luftsperr-Abteilung 203 (o),
        (8.9.1943-22.4.1944) 22.3.1944 gestrichen,
        (25.11.1944-Kriegsende) 20.3.1945 schwere Panzer-Jagd-Zug 16.

and you can see where it stopped being the FpNr for Luftsperr-Abteilung 203 and was eventually reallocated to schwere Panzer-Jagd-Zug 16.

As far as I'm aware a Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur is a command unit for an airfield (or a number of airfields in an area - but not certain of that) rather than a training unit.
