I cant recomend a book on signatures as i really havent had to source one.
I know enough collectors whos judgement i trust to provide me with comparative examples if im after any in particular. Also since the advent of these type of forums(and internet information in general),there is more information available than a hundred books could contain.Dont get me wrong, books are a necessity, but unfortunately i havent found one that has ever provided me with all the answers i want.

Signatures are one hard area.Simply due to fact that everytime someone signs their name it will be different.
If you get a document with a certain individuals signature and compare it,with another example that is considered original, you may think yours is a forgery because it doesent match 100%.what you need to do is to get as many examples of the same guys signature and compare the general style.
Signatures vary due to the surface the document is on,the speed at which the signer writes.(some would sign more quickly at times, depending on the volume of docs he had to sign). The type of pen he is using would affect signatures.
try writing your own 20 times fast and check the differences between the examples. Then compare the general points that remain consistent.
Working out if signatures are genuine is more in the eye of the beholder and that only comes with experience at judging these things.

The best thing to do is to ensure the entire document is 100% ok.
Make sure all the details are correct.
The style of writing, amlauts etc are ok.
Research that the guy existed and that the document is accurate in what it is telling you.
Once you have determined that everything looks fine, then start on determining the signature is ok.Usually something indicating the document is bad usually will be found before you get to check out the signature.
If you find out something is odd and the signature doesnt give you that warm fuzzy feeling(doesent comapare favourably to known originals),then you may be holding a bad piece.

Knights cross docs, german cross docs and ss award docs in particular are faked the most.Simply because they attract the highest prices.
I collect heer docs, because they are relatively easy to obtain and are normally modestly priced.
