"Panther" Wehpass & Soldbuch 24th PD

last scans, with decorations. It is interesting to note that the 24th PD, as a former cavalry unit, were allowed to wear the yellow piping when they were retrained on Panzer. They were no means a normal Panzer unit and the original troops still love their horses! Unfortunately they often took more photos of horses than tanks!

          Jim,

Great documentation from a well known unit. My friend attends a yearly treff of the 24th PZD and really gets the stories you never hear about. When the veterans go then all that valuable information goes with them so it's great that Jim documents his time and conversations with these veterans.....not to mention that he picks up some really Great pieces of history along the way. Very nice and intersting group. Thanks for sharing......

I have a couple of Soldbücher and Wehrpässe with the same entries....I am sure that one is even written in the same hand as yours!

            More later.

Very nice set of postings - and a great example of a Panzermann!

So it looks like I./PR24 did some time with 116.PD after getting its Panthers and then later returned to 24.PD.

The way that the Panther battalions were handled is queer when you think about it. They weren't totally independent like Tiger battalions and yet they were not totally tied to their home division either. If you read the FHQ Lageberichte, you can see that Hitler basically thought of the Panther as the equivalent of the Tiger (although more mechanically troubled) and he ordered their movement around as if the addition of a Panther battalion to a specific front would win the war.

Your WP and SB is a good example of the wandering Panthers.

Do you know the exact date he passed away? I wrote a book about the division in 2001 but I keep a copy updated with handwritten notes.

Wilhelm Karl Robert Martin von der Trenck, born 10 November 1919 in Königsberg. Sad.

                            Panther soldiers uniform effects

these are items which came through US captivity. Upon surrender in 1945 the soldiers of the 24th PD who surrendered to the Americans were allowed to keep their uniform effects. This soldier was released from captivity in a relatively short time and came home with these items. Note that his dogtag is Pz Rgt 1 and has been repaired.
