Info about Luftwaffe Ace: Herbert Schramm

Hi everybody,

I´m doing a research about the fighter aces of the Luftwaffe that won the Oakleaves. Among them there is Oberleutnant Herbert Schramm, pilot of the Jagdgeschwader 53 and 27, who was KIA on 01.12.1943, with 42 victories.

Any info about date of the awards (EP, DK, RK and EL), promotions, and any other thing that you all can share about his career will be useful

Originally a civilian flying instructor. 1942 / 1943 with fighter training schools. then to JG 27, (Home defence). 480 missions, 42 victories, (28 in east,, 3 four engines). KIA near Eupen in combat with P 47s.

Herbert Schramm

Hi Douglas, I have a few additional pieces of information concerning Herbert Schramm. At the outbreak of the war he was serving in 8/J.G.53 as a Feldwebel. During the French campaign he achieved 2 victories, the first being on 14-05-1940. He also took part in the Battle of Britain scoring 7 victories. On the Eastern Front he became one of the most sucessfull pilots in his Gruppe, shooting down 4 Russian bombers on 15-06-1941 before being awarded the Ritterkreuz on 06-08-1941 after 25 victories. During the 'Reichvertidigung' he shot down 3 B-17 bombers before being shot down by a P-47 over Eupen, Belguim on 01-12-1943 and killed. Promoted to Hauptmann posthumously. I hope to of been of some help.
