Hi Ken,
Interesting shots! Is it just me of is there something weird about the belt buckle in photo 3? It also looks like he has no shoulder boards and a M-16 pattern helmet. I wonder if this guy is real early or real late? The tunic is a M-36 with pleated pockets and green collar but it could be a re-issue like the helmet. You see some real museum pieces getting issued to the Volksturm guys and this fellow looks pretty young.
Any thoughts? Cheers, Bill Huber

Hi Ken,
Well, there's my answer - neither! It looks like it says Friedelsheim September 1939 which means its just after the invasion of Poland. It occurs to me that this guy is not on the cutting edge of the Wehrmacht or he wouldn't have an antique helmet. A quick check in Yahoo reveals that Friedelsheim is in the Pfalz region of Germany (over by France) so he was guarding Germany's back door while the rest of the army was off kicking in Poland's front door!
I just thought it was strange that this young guy had so many odd things about his uniform like the funky beltbuckle, no shoulder boards and a vintage helmet. Often training units wore no shoulderstraps and he sure does have a bright shiney new K-98 there so maybe he just got stuck with guard duty and is still in basic training.
Can anybody out there shed some light on that belt buckle and why the antique helmet?
Idle thoughts on a slow Friday afternoon.....
Cheers, Bill Huber

Hi Ken,
shacks were usually made with a wooden modular construction system.
The shack on the picture is brick construction.
Barracks (Kasernen) had usually two (Luftwaffe) or three floors.
Barracks with one floor are rare too, but this building looks more like a shack.
