Actually, I don't think those guys are cooks. Rather, I think they are what we Army types called KPs (Kitchen Police), soldiers detailed for the day to help out in the cookhouse. KPs did most of the cleaning and much of the food prep while the cooks did the actual cooking. If you've read the "Gunner Asch" books by Hans Helmut Kirst you will recall the "cook house detail" was a normal part of a soldier's life in barracks and in the field.
