Most likely a dueling scar from his student days. The dueling scar, also called schmiss or renommierschmiss (bragging scar), was considered a mark of honor. Young fraternity men at German Universities proved their valor in these duels.

Here's a Luftwaffe major in a car. It looks as though he has a sword cut on his left cheek.
