Very nice portrait....at first I thought the metal device was crossed Cannons but I looked closer with my lupe and it appears to be the numerals 31. Thanks for sharing. Here are a few more portraits from my collection. #962

I had a go with the scanner. It does look like crossed cannons...maybe..so could be an artillery officer then...

Crossed Cannon means Ordnance Korps and his branch color is orange.

Well in Brian L. Davis book on German Army Uniforms & Insignia it states " Leutnant individual officer concerned with weapons systems. These officers wore the uniform of an Artillery Officer with gilt metal crossed cannons ".
