    Dog Tag help

I have never attempted to research individual soldiers, but I am very interested in attempting to find information concerning this dog tag. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me some help?

    Very much appreciated.

Are you asking for the unit? If so it’s 11th company Infantry regiment 55

You can find some info about them here

Thanks. Is there a way to identify the individual soldier?

Not unless you have a complete roster of the unit, and even then it’s a long shot as soldiers were rotated out regularly.

Thanks. That was my fear. A dead-end I am afraid.

Just curious here but the image you posted is labelled GJR218, a regiment from the 7 Geb.Div. and thus within my field of interest. Any connection or reason for that?

I have a reason to believe that this could be the tag for a Captain of GJR 218, that later was promoted to Major. A potential connection to a tunic I recently purchased for Major Franz Herlein.

                    How it may track

It seems that after the invasion of Poland and France that the 3rd BN 55th Infantry was turned into Infanterie-Regiment 218, then on 10. Oktober 1941 changed again to Jäger-Regiment 218.

                    Jäger-Regiment 218 was re-designated Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 218.

“Das Jäger-Regiment 218 wurde am 10. Oktober 1941 aufgestellt. Das Regiment entstand durch die Umbenennung des Infanterie-Regiment 218. Das Regiment blieb weiter der 99. leichten Division unterstellt. Bereits am 15. November 1941 wurde das Regiment bei der Umgliederung zur 7. Gebirgs-Division in Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 218 umbenannt.”

So how do you get a name from an erkennungsmarke?

Unfortunately, this is all i have on Franz Herlein, the notification of his DKiG award.

As you have a potential connection to an officer, you may be able to get hold of his personnel file, which if nothing else should be able to tell you if he served in the 11 Kp. of IR55

He was at any rate with I./IR 128 as a leutnant at the outbreak of war.

                          Link

Here is my thread with the tag, I have a uniform, his dog tag and a wedding photo to the Soldier and a number of items, but no name?

Was wondering if another uniform with name was the same, soldier?

Is it possible to find a name from a dog tag? There must be a central record, how does Germany ID MIA/KIA remains when they find them with Dog Tags?
