    32 Infantry division

Does anyone have some unit history dealing with this division, in specific Infantry regiment 96 to which it belonged in 32th division.

    Thanks

Known as the "Lion Division" because of its unit emblem. Served in Poland on the northern sector as part of II Corps. Fought on the Western Front with the 4th Army, stayed with II Corps for the invasion of Russia in 1941, fought in the battles of Dvinsk, Lake Ilmen and Valdai Hills, and tied down in the Battles round Demyansk from January 1942 through to February 1943. It was encircled for much of this time and had to be supplied by air. The division remained on the northern sector during the defensive battles of 1943 and was briefly transferred to Army Group Centre in January 1943. When the Russians broke the Siege of Leningrad the division was hurriedly sent back to the northern sector. It retreated through the Baltic States into the Courland Pocket, was involved in the battles in western Latvia of the winter of 1944/45, finally being evacuated by sea to Gernany in early 1945. The division was finally cut off in the Hela Peninsula by the final Soviet Offensive and surrendered on the 8th May 1945. A very brief history of the Division.
