Feldwebel or Wachtmeister?

Not sure where to put this, hope here works OK.

So how does one figure if a guy is a Feldwebel or a Wachtmeister? What is the real difference between these two? Is there a substantive one?

The only difference is branch of service.

Wachtmeister, like Rittmeister, was used by cavalry and transport branches. Wachtmeister was also used in artillery.

These are historical carry-overs from the Imperial army.

Gday Marc,
As you know my Opa was also a Wachtmeister in Flak, as he was a transport equipment administrator. So as stated due to his transport connection. I guess your Opa may have been employed in a similar field.
