I asked about can I ask some to him, and he allowed.

Regarding the question around Peiper's medals after the war, it is well documented that any of the veterans who surrendered along the Enns River to the Americans, had everything removed from them. Medals went first, then other personal items right down to photos and pens, etc.

Anything that may have been 'left / hidden' would have been removed during the Malmedy Process.

I would surmise that, unless Peiper had some at his home address (like Kurt Meyer) and some others - then they are residing in the home of an ex-GI or in a private collection now.

'Smaller' medals were prized items - imagine what a set of Swords emblazoned RK would have attracted!

I know of at least 2 examples of W-SS RK holders (other esteemed forum members probably know of more?) who acquired a replacement RK in the post war years, before the 57 patterns were issued. One was direct from the jewellers who made them during the war and was through a personal friend who worked there - the other was an original war-time medal.

With the veterans that I was lucky enough to meet with, a very small percentage were lucky enough to retain the RKs they had been issued with during the war, the majority being taken as 'souvenirs' by the 'liberators'.
