    information on landesschutzen battailon 878

I am trying to do research on a man who was in the landesschutzen- battailon 878. but information on this battailon is hard to come by. I know they were stationed in Linz, Danube. in 1941- 1942 at feldpost number 16592b. All info will be helpful.

    Thanks John

    Landesschützen-Btl. 878
*Formed 1.1.1941 by renaming Heimat-Wach-Btl. III./Inf.Rgt. 643 (which had been formed 26.8.1939 as Ldschtz.Btl. XVII./IX in Dillenburg). Btl. 878 was subordinate to Wehrkreis XVII, Division 417 in Gneixendorf; in 1942 in was stationed in Linz under Kommandeur der Kriegsgefangenen XVII.

[Source: Tessin, Georg. Verbände und Truppen....... Band XIII, p.86].

So all the above really says is that in 1942 it was guarding PoW camps located in the Linz area in Wehrkreis XVII and in all probability remained there doing the same thing to the end of the war.

Not sure I understand........do you mean about other units that were stationed in Linz? If that's the question, then I guess you could do a Google search. If that fails, you could order the appropriate microfilms covering the records of the Ersatzheer from the U.S. National Archives in WashDC ($64. per roll). If that fails, you could search for German language books on Linz during the war. Finally, if that fails then you could try writing to the Stadtarkiver in Linz and ask them. Linz was a big garrison town, so there were a lot of units that were stationed there at various times during the war - probably several hundred.
