    Hohenstaufen

    Hello all,

This might be the wrong place to post this, and if it is the Moderator can move if desired. With that being said, let me ask, what does Hohenstaufen mean?

Hohen is "high" in German, correct?

Please let me know either way. Thank you.

The Staufer were a noble family that produced several Kings in Medieval Germany (1138 to 1254). I believe Frederick Barbarossa was a Staufer.

From the book, In the Firestorm of the Last Years of the War by Wihelm Tieke (page 2):

The official name of the division was announced in an order on March 19, 1943, which stated that the Division was to bear the name of a family that had become immortal through "outstanding" deeds.
