ROAG Deumer, black paint on wreath

    Hi guys,
I need to start new thread , due to interesting additional discovery on the ROAG badge , which I posted yesterday here http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=807367
With additional study today, I saw left over black paint on wreath and hardware.
What it can be? Obviously, paint was applied after finishing and soldering processes, also paint is acetone negative (probably period one). This one is Nickel-silver badge and it's too early to be Unqualified AG badge.
I will really appreciate for any thoughts and opinions in this matter.
    Andrei

Interesting, The eagle look to have been spay as well. As you mentioned its a too early piece to be an unqualified AG. On your previous post I mentioned the pin might have been resoldered but with these new close up its just fine.

                  Hi Andrei,

Your guess is as good as mine, I really can't think of a reason why someone would paint their badge black. I wonder if it might be some type of lacquer that has turned black over time??

I, as well, have always wondered when we've seen Luft aircrew badges with a black paint/finish. Whether wartime or ? Has anyone found any photos in wear of them?

I am with Tom. I think it is more likely a lacquer that has aged and allowed a patina to form.

                        Possible.
Is period lacquer acetone negative, like a period paint?

Period lacquer on B&NL badges WILL be removed by acetone.

Looks like heavy/thick patina on this badge, for whatever reason.

                          Regards

                            Hi guys,

Here is recent addition of mine. Interestingly enough, there seems to be what looks like black paint or primer on mine as well, very similar to what we are seeing on Andrei's example that started this thread. Like Andrei's, mine is also made by Deumer so I am wondering if this black paint was some type of production step here with this manufacturer that we hadn't really noticed until now. On mine, the black paint seems to be under the silver finish on the wreath's Obverse. However, I don't really see any traces of it on the reverse of the wreath (under the finish). There is some black paint on top of the silver finish, particularly on the hinge and around the catch. Very weird, but definitely doesn't look like natural patina to me. Certainly not on the obverse, where it is under the finish.

                            Any more thoughts on this?

                            Tom
