As I don´t know anything about the different Spanish decorations, I have never given this a thought.
Checking in Ernst Obermaier´s book "Die Ritterkreuzträger der Luftwaffe 1939–1945", it says Wilhelm Spies was awarded the "Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern"... So your comments really make sence!
