do you think a German would make this mistake or is it possible this was engraved postwar?

it must have been worn by " Hptm Muencheberg " nick named

the 'Falcon of Malta' since he's shot down over 20 fighters within

        3 months !

his squadron had been stationed in 'Catania" early 1941 ..

Whoever has an original pic of him ... please !!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Is Muencheberg's name simply not on this badge yet?

It's odd there is absolutely no patina/dirt/stuff inside the writing...

            J1 engraving

            Hi William,

when done ? .... that leaves enough room for speculations !

War time or post war ... the people have remained the same.... I guess, no !?

But, I admit the badge points to pre war times ... I can't see a pilot

wearing a rather fragile J1 still in 45 ..... after all these years ...

To me it makes a lot of sense that the engraving had been done after the war

as a reminder on his posting in peace time 'Neuhausen' ... Prussia

Pilot's in our days would refer to Neuhausen ob Eck in Bavaria ....

Prussia is long forgotten - not talking about details -

by many Germans these days !

I'd guess that the badge had been stored safely and when memories came

back and his hands got shaky he did the engraving !

            Regards

            Wolf

The first place you should see patina/crap is in the crevasse and it take very few years to happen if your are not taking care of storage witch was the case of most badges until they find collector who took care of them. Even if he did it after the war it should have something unless that have been remove not so long ago. On this reverse you can clearly see patina on some lettering and some don't have and seem remove witch is completely in contradiction.
