    A question for the experts...

    Hello gentlemen.

Has anyone ever heard of a reconnaissance squadron clasp that has the eagle head made of bakelite?? I've searched the threads and can't find anything. It looks like a period item to me.

    Thanks,

It seems a broken clasp and rebuilt with a baquelite head.

...not so easy to make bakelite, IMO it's resin.

Interesting and seemingly well made; I would have to handle this piece personally before making any judgements

I understand most of the skepticism on this clasp. It just looks so very well made imo. Why would a faker produce a clasp with such an obvious material replacement.
I'm interested to hear what Tom Durante has to say.

Well Dave, I'll tell you right now that no maker we've heard of used bakelite birds on their clasps.
You could circumvent the forum and just pm Tom directly if you're not getting the answer you want here Did I just say that?
I'll venture to say that Barry (e-medals) doesn't believe in it either, judging from the price.

                      Hi Frank,

I just wanted some interesting discussion. Even a beginner like me gets a little tired of "Nice one"..."thumbs up" etc, most of the time. I'm not interested in purchasing the piece, so there really is no answer that I'm looking for.

                      Sincerely,

                      Dave

                        Hi guys,

This is an unmarked Juncker clasp, but heavily messed with in my opinion. The details of the eagle's head looks correct, but the weird material is very questionable. Additionally, the rivet is not the typical Juncker rivet which is also suspicious and could point to it being a replacement.

This type of Juncker Recon clasp, although unmarked can be considered a pretty early clasp in my opinion due to the additional hand filing of the drill holes at the base of the leaves. So even if Juncker would be experimenting with bakelite or whatever, I doubt it would be early in the war, when this type of clasp would have been produced in my opinion.

                        Tom
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

I see the bell shaped holes that indicate early Juncker.

Exactly the point Frank, why would Juncker be using bakelite on such an early clasp? Doesn't make sense IMO, especially give the fact that we know of plenty of other Juncker Recon clasps both marked and unmarked that use the typical nickel silver eagle with excellent quality oxidized finish for the eagle heads.
