Ehrenpokal in Case

Part of a mainly document group just acquired, this Ehrenpokal is 'only' Alpaka but came in its case and with award certificate. Plenty of research potential for the grouping so more will follow.

Really nice to have a case and document with the goblet even if Alpaka. Hope it turns out to be special. So now we know why you sell some things lately. I think if I sold all my stuff, goblets would be among the last to go. Congratulations - very nice!

I like the poetic justice of this man's career. He began missions in 1940, flying with Kamfgruppe 126, which was a unit specialising in minelaying. It carried air-dropped mines against land targets during the Battle of Britain and I have Petersen's Flugbuch, which details the bomb loads carried on many of his missions.

Petersen then served with KG53 in Russia before ending his career from 1943-45 flying with Minensuchgruppe 1, flying in Ju52s fitted with devices to detonate magnetic mines dropped in German waters by the Allies.

As a consequence the document group includes a certificate for the Kriegsmarine Minesweeper Award Badge. I guess this is a rare award to a member of the Luftwaffe aircrew.

I know it's the wrong forum for this but here is the certificate (and a picture of the man just for interest). I have opened another thread to discuss the fact he never seems to have been awarded any aircrew qualification badge - a bit of a mystery at present.

Hi Tim.
Very nice grouping and as you said a rare KM doc to a LW guy, and an interesting assignment regarding the mines, I have never heard to of this role in the LW.

I need to do a lot more research but this specialist unit flew aircraft fitted with an eletric coil to trigger magnetic mines. Here is a photo from the book 'Minensuchgruppe Mausi' by Heinz Nowarra - unfortunately for me it's in German so will take a bit of time to research!
